You have your dumpster, and you’re ready to begin your project. Great! While it may seem simple, there are some key factors to keep in mind while using your dumpster, such as overfill, inactivity, and hazardous waste. Before you get started, check out these tips on making the most of your dumpster rental period and avoiding potential fees.
Using Your Dumpster
- Avoid hazardous materials. We cannot accept any kind of hazardous waste such as motor oil, freon, tires, or pesticides. When you order your dumpster, let us know what you plan to dispose of so we can advise you if you’re trying to get rid of any of the hazardous materials above. Putting hazardous materials in your dumpster can result in fines from your service provider, other agencies, or localities, not to mention pose environmental and health risks to people involved in the disposal.
- Be mindful of weight. Different dumpster types and sizes can accommodate different weights. Work with one of our experts to get the best estimate so you don’t go over the weight limit. Also, only use the dumpster for the project for which you rented it. Be mindful that adding additional materials that nudge the dumpster past the weight limit can incur additional fees.
- Don’t overfill the dumpster. All dumpsters have a fill line. If you go over the fill line, you’ll be responsible for ordering a second dumpster to manage the overfill. Haulers cannot take overfilled dumpsters during the pickup period. This can result in a dry run fee.
- Use the walk-in feature. Most dumpsters have the infrastructure to be able to be opened for easy loading, so you can use the walk-in feature. This is especially useful if you’re disposing of large or heavy objects. Make sure to shut the door tightly when you’re done, and continue to be mindful of the overfill line.
- Cover your bin. You may have a dumpster rental period that spans days or weeks. When you’re not actively loading the dumpster, it’s best practice to cover it with a tarp secured with straps. This will protect the dumpster from rain and will ensure passersby can’t toss random waste into your dumpster – waste you’d ultimately be liable for.
