Types of Roll Off Dumpsters

While there are several types, we’ll focus on construction, commercial, and residential.  These bins come in various sizes and types to meet your specific needs. The most common sizes are 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 cubic yards.  10s, and 15s, are perfect for smaller projects such as renovations, home cleanouts, or junk removals.  The larger ones, 20yd, 30yd, and 40yds are suitable for larger construction sites, commercial sites, renovations, and disaster clean up. A second common type of bin is a concrete roll off which is used to dispose of concrete, free of any rebar. If you’d like to learn more please consult our dumpster rental resource center.  As always, an ASAP advisor is standing by to answer any questions you may have. Tips for Renting Open-Tops

    • Pick the right size: Account for both the amount of waste you need to dispose of and the amount of available space on-site when choosing your rental.  Be sure to consult our size guide and debris calculator.
    • Drop-off location: Make accommodations to ensure your rental is accessible by service providers.
    • Local regulations: Check with local regulations to check whether a permit is required or if there are specific placement restrictions
    • Debris Type: Make sure the type of trash you’re managing matches up with the bin you rent—some materials require specific rental types, e.g. appliances.
    • Rental Period:  Our typical rental is for 10 -14 days.  You can keep your bin for longer but you will face a daily rental fee.
    • Arrange Pickup Early:  Know when your rental period is up and call us to arrange for pickup to ensure you do not keep it longer than you need.

Bin Placement and Removal

Once you have decided which size to rent, you will need to decide when and where it should be delivered. We do not guarantee specific delivery times. If you need it first thing in the morning, we recommend scheduling delivery for the day prior.

If no one will be on-site to receive your rental, be sure to provide detailed placement instructions and ensure the driver will have safe and convenient access to the area where you would like it placed.  If you need a residential dumpster, make sure you do not have it dropped over sprinklers and place down plywood if you place the unit on your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

With decades of experience in the industry, we know just about everything there is to know about portable toilets and sanitation services. Here are a few of the questions we hear the most from our customers.

What is the most common sized dumpster for construction and commercial jobs?

The 30-yard dumpster is the most common sized unit for commercial and construction jobs. 40-yard units are also used on these job sites, but they are not as common.

What is the most common sized dumpster for residential jobs?

The 20-yard dumpster is the most common sized unit for residential jobs. 10-yard and 15-yard units are also popular.

What size dumpster is rented the most?

20-yard and 30-yard open tops are our two most common sized open-tops.

How big is a dumpster bag?

These bags are usually between 2.5-5 cubic yards. Most are around 3 cubic yeards.

How do I know what size roll off dumpster I need?

The size needed depends on the size of your project and how much space you have to store the bin. Roll off rental sizes are typically measured in cubic yards. The exterior dimensions of the bin are usually measured in feet. To find the volume of a unit you simply multiply the exterior dimensions of width, height and length in feet and then divide the final figure by 27 to determine total volume in cubic yards. See our Blog Post here or ask an ASAP Advisor. See our Blog Post here or ask an ASAP Advisor.

Am I able to choose where the commercial dumpster is placed?

We recommend placing on a flat, hard surface with room to access both ends and that will not block any of your entryways. If there are concerns about potential damage to the surface of where you’re requesting placement, we recommend putting down a piece of plywood for protection. If you’d like to request we place the residential dumpster on the road or street in front of your house, be sure that you have a permit prior to the delivery.

What is the typical rental period for a roll off dumpster?

Dumpsters are typically rented by the week. You might find them rented on a monthly basis, but expect weekly rental rates.

What happens if I overfill the open-top?

If debris is filled above the wall height or items are included in the container making the container overweight, you would be responsible for off-loading the container into another bin. If an additional service is needed it would reuiqre the rental of another container.

What would happen if the container is unable to be removed because the driver could not access it?

There would be a dry-run fee assessed for the wasted trip to the location.

Would there be any additional fees after paying for the open-top at the time the order is placed?

Other than the charge per cubic yard of the bin, additional fees can occur if you exceed your allotted tonnage amount or exceed the number of days included in the rental.

Do I need to be present when the roll off dumpster is delivered?

No, you do not have to be onsite at the time of delivery or pickup. However, to ensure we are meeting your expectations, we ask that you provide specific placement instructions and contact information for the person who would be available to take a call should questions arise.

Can I place a residential dumpster in my yard?

When it comes to placing a residential dumpster on your grass, it's best to proceed with caution. There are a few factors to consider. First, you'll want to make sure that the ground is sturdy enough to support the weight of the bin. If the ground is too soft, it could sink and cause damage to the grass. Additionally, you'll want to avoid placing it on any sprinkler heads or septic systems. If you have a septic tank, make sure you clearly mark it's location. A fully loaded truck can weight 15 tons and it can collapse into your septic tank.

Can I place an open-top on my driveway?

Driveways and streets are ideal locations for a roll off . In most cases, it can be safely placed on your driveway without causing any damage. However, it's important to note that some factors may affect whether or not this is possible, such as its weight and the condition of your driveway. Particularly heavy bins can crack your driveway. We recommend placing plywood down to help add an additional layer of protection.

What can’t be placed in the open-top?

We can not accept any type of hazardous waste such as pesticides, motor oil, freon, tires, etc. We ask that when placing the order, you disclose what you’re looking to dispose of so that we can advise of any potential issues. Including these items could result in additional fees and having to unload these items prior to removal.

What are the dimensions of a 40 yard dumpster?
