Dumpster Sizes & Pricing Chart (2025)

There are two types of rental dumpsters:

  • Roll-off dumpsters: Roll-off dumpsters are much larger than commercial dumpsters and are better suited for temporary use and projects that generate a lot of waste. They’re also the best option when storing and removing large items like furniture, flooring, and home appliances. (You see these units at every construction site.) The two most common sizes are 20-yard and 30-yard roll-off dumpsters.
  • Commercial dumpsters: Commercial dumpsters are smaller, square-shaped dumpsters with medium capacity, in sizes ranging from two to eight yards. They’re generally used to manage regular, recurring waste disposal from businesses like offices, restaurants, and apartment complexes. There are two types of commercial dumpsters: front-loaded and rear-loaded.

Our guide includes sizing and pricing for both types of dumpster rentals so you can find the right product for your project.

Considerations When Choosing a Rental Dumpster

There are various reasons to rent a dumpster: you may be a construction manager preparing for a new project or a homeowner tackling renovations or landscaping projects.

When choosing the right dumpster type and size, consider the following:

  • Your project — The nature of your project significantly impacts your dumpster rental needs. Large commercial projects will likely create more waste and require more dumpster space than smaller residential ones. Likewise, your options may change depending on whether you’re cleaning up natural debris from a landscaping project or large, bulky furniture or construction materials from a remodeling project.
  • Your budget — Dumpster prices vary depending on your location, the nature and duration of your project, and the size of your dumpster. Considering these factors before you rent can help ensure your waste removal needs don’t exceed your budget.
  • The type of debris you need to dispose of — Different dumpsters support different types of waste and junk removal, so you should understand the waste your project will generate before you rent.
  • Weight limits — Each dumpster type is subject to specific weight limits. The rental company usually sets these, but weight limits remain relatively standard across the industry. Before filling a dumpster, you should understand these weight limits to avoid overage fees.
  • Dumpster regulations — The location of your project is another key factor to consider. If you’re working on a project or job site in a public space, you need to seek special permits from your city. On the other hand, placing residential dumpsters may require approval from HOAs or other organizations.

FAQs on Dumpster Rentals & the Rental Process

What impacts dumpster rental pricing?

Dumpster rental costs depend on:

  • Your location & availability in your area
  • The type & size of the dumpster you choose
  • The number of hauls you require (for roll-off dumpsters) or the duration of your project (for commercial dumpsters)

Our team can provide a precise quote and walk you through the dumpster rental process. Call us at 888-413-5105 to explore your options.

What items can I dispose of in a rental dumpster?

You can dispose of a variety of waste items in our dumpsters, including:

  • Household junk
  • Carpet
  • Flooring
  • Appliances
  • Electronics
  • Furniture
  • Mattresses & box springs
  • Fixtures
  • Yard waste
  • Stumps
  • Gravel, stone & rock
  • Construction debris
  • Wood & drywall
  • Roofing materials & shingles
  • Concrete
  • Block
  • Brick
  • Dirt

What can’t I dispose of?

We can not accept any type of hazardous materials or waste, including:

  • Pesticides
  • Motor oil and fuel
  • Freon
  • Tires
  • Inks, paints, oils, varnishes, and resins
  • Asbestos
  • Chemical waste
  • Refrigerant
  • Biological waste

We’ll discuss your project and the items you want to dispose of during the ordering process. Please disclose any items you’re unsure about so we can advise you of any potential issues ahead of your rental period.

Where can I place a rental dumpster?

You can place rental dumpsters:

  • On your property — for example, in your driveway or yard
  • Behind your home or business
  • Public parking lots or streets
  • Sidewalks
  • Trails
  • Construction sites
  • Fields and grass
  • Any open space free of low hanging power lines

Please note that dumpsters should be placed on a hard, flat surface with room to access both ends. We recommend placing a piece of plywood below the dumpster if you’re worried about placement or potential damage to your driveway, yard, or street. We can’t place dumpsters on hills or an incline.

Do I need a permit to rent a dumpster?

You typically do not need a permit to place your dumpster on private property, such as your driveway, yard, or behind your home or business.

However, if you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, you should double-check the rules before renting.

Cities typically require permits if you plan on placing your dumpster on a public street, parking lot, sidewalk, or trail.

Do I need to be around for dumpster drop-offs or pick-ups?

Nope!

When scheduling your dumpster delivery, we’ll gather placement rules so we know where and when to place the dumpsters. We just need a contact number so we can reach you if we have questions on the day of the delivery.

You also do not need to be available for pick-ups; we just ask that dumpsters be accessible for haulers to remove.

How do I empty a rental dumpster?

You will schedule pick-ups when dumpsters are full, and our haulers will drop by to remove and replace the dumpster. Again, we ask that containers be accessible for removal.

(If drivers cannot access or remove containers during your scheduled pick-up, you’ll be subject to a dry-run fee for the wasted trip.)

What happens if you overload a dumpster?

Overfilling your dumpster or exceeding the tonnage amount can result in overage fees.

If debris is spilling over the sides or the container is too heavy for the truck to lift, haulers will ask you to unload waste into another dumpster. This would incur additional fees — in the form of an extra container or a swap-and-return for the existing unit.
